52 Weeks in the Word Student Edition
Today is an exciting day! The 52 Weeks in the Word Student Edition is out! You can learn all about it here. If you want to walk through the New Testament with your kids, it’s a great tool to help you through the journey.
To celebrate, I thought I’d include an excerpt from one of the 52 short articles I include in the book. Wherever you are in your reading journey, you will also experience times when you read the Bible and wonder if injustice, cruelty, and evil win in the end. The reality is that we live in a fallen world, and evil is all around us. I’d be concerned if the Bible didn’t include the challenging or even disgusting parts of life. And with everything related to the Christian life, believing that God wins in the end takes faith. So, we ask God, who graciously gives us all things, to also give us faith.
Here’s a taste of the 52 Weeks in the Word Student Edition:
The Hard Parts of the Bible
The Bible is filled with all sorts of true stories. If you know anything about a story, sometimes they are also filled with sadness and injustice. As you read the Bible, you will come across some really hard stories. These stories are not in the Bible for no reason. They often point to the character of Jesus or the danger and tension of the time period. Sometimes they prepare us for the tough things that we might experience. It’s always good to know that you are not alone or that God understands.
As you read Matthew 14, you might have been filled with sadness or even confusion. Why would a man like John the Baptist, who shared all about Jesus, die in such an awful way? Why does it seem like the bad guy won?
If you asked these questions, they are good questions. But we can trust that the way John the Baptist was killed made God’s heart sad, too. God is not happy with injustice. He also doesn’t ignore it. John the Baptist is now with Jesus in heaven forever. You will read more about Herod and his story in the rest of the Gospels.
Whenever you come across a tough story and you find yourself asking lots of questions, grab an adult and ask them to help you understand.
